Goodbye Norma Jean

March 27, 2007 · Leave a Comment

It was all over the radio this morning that Anna Nicole Smith used Slimfast, various medicines and growth hormones to lose weight … not TrimSpa (baby).   I only caught the tail end of it, but I think we realized this the minute TrimSpa  announced Anna Nicole lost “69lbs” on their product.   Anyway, apparently 9 (YES NINE) different drugs were found in Anna’s deceased body.  Girl was high on 6 sedatives and a medication for warts (sexy).  As my mother said “no wonder she always slurred.” The cocktail of drug includes:

- Trichloroethanol (a sedative and hypnotic)
- Trichloroacetic acid (treatment of warts, including genital warts)
- Diphenhydramine hydrochloride (an antihistimine and sedative)
- Clonazepam (aka Klonopin; used for treating anxiety)
- Diazepam (muscle relaxant, used for treating anxiety, insomnia)
- Nordiazapam (sedative)
- Temazepam (a sedative and hypnotic)
- Oxazepam (a muscle relaxant and sedative)
- Lorazapam (anti-nausea, sedative, muscle relaxant)

Probiotics: The Bacteria You Want in Food

March 23, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Apparently, Probiotics are on the verge of hip.  And honestly, there’s just something fun about the word “gut.”

A list of the benefits of probiotics sounds too good to be true, but so far studies have corroborated that by taking the good flora, you inhibit bad flora growth and this means you are less susceptible to harboring toxic or carcinogenic compounds and enzymes that could lead to diseases such as cancer, IBS, Crohn’s disease and vaginal disease. This same concept – inhabiting the space with a good bacteria rather than a bad bacteria, means probiotics can also help with lactose intolerance, eczema, yeast infections and bad breath.

And get this: Probiotics are the ideal counterbalance when it comes to eating too much sugar, or taking antibiotics. “If people are eating too much sugar, then they may have too much yeast, so probiotics can offset that,” says Kraft.”

Lately, I Cannot Live Without …

Greek Yogurt.  Not only is it dreamy and luscious on its own or mixed with bananas or berries, but I love that it is a healthy substitute for traditionally fattening condiments, like mayonnaise and sour cream.  So far, I’ve snuck it into potato salad, coleslaw, tuna fish, and chicken and turkey salads.   I’ve dolloped it onto turkey chili and chicken tacos.  I’ve added it to onion dip and baked it in a hot bubbling artichoke dish.  I brought the latter 2 dishes to parties and people where shocked to learn they were eating Greek yogurt based foods.

One full container of the Greek Yogurt pictured above is 130 calories, 4 grams of fat, 8 carbs, and 17 protein.   So 2T of the Fage is 19 calories and 1 gram of fat.  Compare that to 2T of my Hellman’s Just to Good Mayo at 50 calories, and 4 grams of fat.   In fact, my chicken salad is now mixed with 2T Greek yogurt and 1T light mayo.  Not too shabby.    And the end product is so much creamier.  Mmm.

Yoga Day

In addition to Yoga 1, the gym on my street is now offering Kundalini, Iyengar, and Anusara yoga classes. I’ve done some research and prefer the latter two, yet only the Kundalini really works with my schedule (and thats only if you define 9:30am on a Sunday a good time).  In fact, the other two are offered at very non-standard times, specifically at 10:05am Monday or Friday – so it leads me to wonder what genre of person takes these funkay yoga classes?   You know these sessions aren’t stocked by your standard 9-5 working girl.  I guess I’ll find out.

Speaking of exercise, I am currently putting the finishing touches on a new fitness schedule.  I’m bored of walking around my town and sick of my treadmill too. I’ve decided to step out of my comfort zone and give exercise classes a try.   I’ve enjoyed these types of classes in the past, but always with a buddy.   I am slightly nervous, yet I’ve come to realize I’m almost past it, enough to take the chance and say it will get easier with time?  Oh and, betcha I’m the lone Whitey Mcwhiteson groovin it at that Hip Hop Aerobics class.  Oh well.

The plan is to re-evaluate in May after I travel to Flordia for a family thing.   At that point I hope to be conditioned enough to introduce spinning (aieee!) and  cardio-kickboxing.  The first few weeks will undoubtedly include a bit of hopping around until I find instructors that work for me, however for now we have:

Monday – Cardio/Step Aerobics
Tuesday – Cardio/Hip Hop Aerobics and perhaps Meditatation & Toning/Tai Chi
Wednesday – Cardio/Step Aerobics
Thursday – Toning/Sculpting (and perhaps 30 Minutes Cardio)
Friday – Meditatation & Toning/Anusara Yoga (and perhaps 30 Minutes Cardio)
Saturday - No Planned Classes but Hip Hop Aerobics is at 11:15am
Sunday - No Planned Classes but Kundalini Yoga is at 9:30am

Based on what my body is telling me,  I will take Saturday, Sunday, or Monday as a rest day.  Right now I have no official classes planned on the weekends (really the weekend classes leave a lot to be desired), however I can either use the treadmill at home, walk outside with the significant other, or pop into the gym for a quick stint on the Cybex or Elliptical.    Once I’ve worked myself up to Cardio Kickboxing and Cycling I could rock the gym on the weekends.  Until then, this is a start.

My Hair? My Word!

March 12, 2007 · 1 Comment

For the past month, I’ve been getting a lot of compliments on my hair.  It’s not like I wear it in a special way.  It’s long and brown and starting to grey.  Yet all I’ve been hearing is how thick it’s gotten and how healthy it looks.   Now my hair has always been very thin, and when I get very stressed, I lose it in clumps (sexy, no?).   My stress levels have only increased, so I was at a loss to understand this phenomenon.

I mentioned the wonder hair to my cousin who instantly came back with:  it’s all the veggies, vitamins and Omega 3’s in your current diet.   Damn.  I shoulda thought of that, huh?

Insecure

March 8, 2007 · 2 Comments

Tomorrow I will have crossed the 2 month line, clocking in at 11lbs lighter.   There have been weeks where I felt like no progress was made admist a whole lot of inner turmoil, frustration, anger, and scale kicking.  Weeks where shopping and planning were such a chore and why why why do I have to keep eating yogurt?  It’s become slightly easier, and sometimes I find myself living within a day where everything falls into place.   I need to remember to embrace those days.

I read recently that for a new behavior to become a habit you really need a 6 month crack at it.    I think I used to set unreasonable goals and then downward spiral when I didn’t meet them.  I am trying to keep a firm grip on my expectations. Right now, my focus is on turning 2 months into 4 months.   I keep reminding myself the goal is to treat my body better.  It’s so very easy to get caught up in old habits though. In fact, there were a few days wherein the scale held a dominant place in my mind.   I had to force myself to stay off.

What’s interesting about a lifetime of never being slim followed by 15+ years of dieting is the insecurity that comes as baggage.  I’ve certainly been 11lbs down and 2 months into it before.  What’s different now?   My progress at this stage is humble at best.   I need to see 6 months.  I need to see the end of 2007.  I need to demonstrate to myself that I’m in it for the long haul.

Last week my cousin and I were talking about vitamins and what the body needs and suddenly she laughed and said “we didn’t talk about this stuff in our 20’s.”  I realized that back then, I didn’t even think about it.   That’s progress.

Vacation Sick?

March 5, 2007 · 1 Comment

I took a week off to visit my family (mom, brother, grandmother, etc) in Florida and picked up the strongest bug I’ve ever encountered in my adult life.  I flew home sick (try that sometime, really).  I’ve dealt with a sore throat, a headache, a barking cough, a runny nose, clogged ears and a non-stop fever for 6 full days (and counting).    In fact, at one point the fever was so high I was actually hallucinating.  My arsenal of tissues, cough drops, nyquil, anti-biotics, and the like is astounding.    The whole thing (plus my birthday) has wrecked havoc with my agenda.   It’s been impossible to stock the fridge, cook, eat, focus on vitamins, exercise, sleep, work, clean, whatever.     The only thing you want to eat at a time like this are comfort foods, and they are all high in carbs.

Happy Birthday to Me!

March 3, 2007 · 1 Comment

I’ve been eyeing these leopard print stillettos for months and thanks to my mom, they are now mine!  While shopping for the meow heels I came across these cute polka dot pumps.  However, I was a little discouraged to learn they belong to the Jessica Simpson line.
